Election of Town Councillors for East Ward of Barnard Castle Parish on Thursday 4 May 2017.

The following five people have been duly elected Town Councillors for East Ward of Barnard Castle Parish.

The town council wants to know whether it is worth spending additional money to take over the Demesnes, Scar Top, Galgate Greens and other open spaces in town over from Durham County Council, to keep these spaces well maintained and available for the enjoyment of residents and visitors.

Our free Christmas event will take place on Friday 29 November, with festive fun for all the family.

Festivities commence at 4:30pm with Seasonal Treats and Snow Globe in the grounds of Woodleigh.

At 6:15pm a Lantern Parade down Galgate Slip Road – will be followed by the arrival of Santa, prior to the ‘switching-on’ of the tree lights at 6.30pm. The town’s traditional Christmas tree has, once again, been kindly donated by Lord Barnard and Raby Estates.

Santa will be resident in his ‘grotto’ in the Methodist Church, balloon modelling, and craft activities.  Seasonal refreshments will also be available in the Church for a small charge.

At a Special Town Council meeting held on 5 October 2015, it was resolved that the distinction of Honorary Freeman be conferred upon Mr Frederick Parkin Raine in recognition of the eminent service he has rendered to the Town of Barnard Castle and its local community over a period of many years, in particular Mr Raine’s contribution to documenting and recording life in Teesdale.

The award was presented on 25 October 2015 by the Town Mayor, Cllr Mrs Sandra Moorhouse, at The Manor House Care Home, John Street, Barnard Castle. In attendance at the presentation were members of Mr Raine’s family, representatives of the town council, together with friends and residents of The Manor House. Following the presentation Mr Raine and his guests all enjoyed an afternoon tea kindly laid on by The Manor House staff.

Mr Raine’s award is only the fourth presented by the Town Council as the honour is awarded only on rare and exceptional occasions.

At a Special Town Council meeting held on 6 July 2015, it was resolved that the distinction of Honorary Freeman be conferred upon Mr Joseph Metcalfe Swinbank in recognition of the eminent service he has rendered to the Town of Barnard Castle and its local community over a period of many years.

The Town Mayor, Cllr Mrs Sandra Moorhouse presented the award to Mr Swinbank on 4 August 2015 at Abbeyfield House, Galgate, Barnard Castle. Following the presentation Mr Swinbank, his guests and the residents of Abbeyfield House all enjoyed an afternoon tea kindly laid on by the Abbeyfield House staff.

Mr Swinbank’s award is only the third presented by the Town Council as the honour is awarded only on rare and exceptional occasions.

The 2018 street collection will run for two weeks from 27 October until Remembrance Sunday, on 11 November.

The town council coordinates the ‘local’ Poppy Appeal (with the help of local volunteers), on behalf of The Royal British Legion.

The Poppy Appeal is The Royal British Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign and runs year-round.

Barnard Castle Town Council, in association with St Mary’s Parish Church co-ordinate arrangements for the Town’s annual Remembrance Service.

Traditionally, a Church Service is held at St Mary’s Parish Church Barnard Castle where an observance of the ‘Two Minutes Silence’ takes place at 11.00 a.m. Anyone attending the church service is requested to take their place in church by 10:45.

Following the Church Service, the Parade Marshall, accompanied by Barnard Castle Band, lead the parade along Newgate to the War Memorial in the grounds of The Bowes Museum for a further Act of Remembrance and laying of wreaths.
