Castle Floodlights
Barnard Castle Town Council works in partnership with English Heritage in connection with the floodlighting of the Town’s Castle.
In 2005, the old floodlights were de-activated because they failed to meet the standard regulations and since then, a project has been ongoing to provide a much-improved floodlighting system which would also be much more energy efficient and ultimately more economical to run and maintain.
Working in partnership with English Heritage, Durham County Council and the Barnard Castle Vision team, the project eventually reached fruition and the new system was officially launched at a ‘switch-on’ event on 27th March, 2010. The new floodlights are mounted on the street-lighting columns and for the majority of the time will project a white light. However, they are capable of being programmed to project different colours such as reds, greens, blues and yellows. Town Council staff will decide on a schedule of occasions/times of the year when those alternative programmes will be used.
Barnard Castle Town Council will continue to meet the electricity costs associated with the new floodlighting and those costs are expected to be substantially reduced when compared with the costs of the old system.
