The Blue Plaque scheme is the responsibility of Barnard Castle Town Council and, over the years, the Council have erected a number of Blue Plaques throughout Barnard Castle, primarily commemorating prominent persons who lived and/or worked in the Town.

Elijah Yeoman

Over the last two years Barnard Castle Town Council have funded the installation of a Blue Plaque dedicated to Elijah Yeoman who was a notable photographer and helped to increase the fame of Teesdale’s scenery in late Victorian times. He worked from premises at 13 Galgate (now Addisons) and the plaque is mounted on that building with the unveiling ceremony taking place on 3rd July, 2009.

Charles Dickens

Also, during 2010 a replacement plaque has been installed on the King’s Court Care Home, Market Place, in respect of a visit by Charles Dickens to the King’s Head formerly on that site. The original plaque was found to contain marginally incorrect dates and this error has now been rectified.

Princess Diana

In April 1998, a tree was planted on Scar Top in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales and a memorial brass plaque was installed adjacent to the tree.

Sadly, over time this plaque went missing. Members agreed that this should be replaced and during June 2010 a new memorial plaque was installed.
